Categorising Audiences
Demographics are statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it. Eg. Income/tax/job
Using a letter code to show their income bracket is one way of describing audiences. This is the ABC1 socio-economic model for categorising audiences:
A- Top management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and other highly salaried professionals
B- Middle management, teachers, many 'creatives' eg graphic designers etc
C1- Office supervisors, junior managers, nurses, specialist clerical staff etc
C2- Skilled workers, tradespersons
D- Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers
E- Unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers
Socioecomics is a field of study that examines social and economic factors to better understand how the combination of both influences something. Eg. Age/sex/gender.
The lifestyle categories model for categorising audiences is:
Cowboys- Make money quickly and easily.
Cynics- Always complaining
Drifters- Don’t know what they want.
Egoists- Get pleasure out of life.
Groupies – want acceptance of those around them.
Rebels – want the world to be how they see it.
Utopians- People who want to make the world a better place.
